Abstract: Fluoride is an essential trace element of human body, but long term and overdose ingestion of fluoride can cause chronic systemic disease characterized by skeletal fluorosis and dental fluorosis, which will seriously affect health and life quality. High level of fluoride may cause cartilage damage, such as necrosis of cartilage cells, abnormal synthesis of cartilage matrix, and decrease of enzyme activity, etc. Some progress havebeen made by researches on cartilage damage caused by fluoride. This article will further expound the action of fluoride on cartilage injury from the aspects of signaling pathway, oxygen free radical and apoptosis, thereby provide some basis for pathogenesis of fluorosis. |
